The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), has launched a free online course aimed at equipping students and professionals with fundamental knowledge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The course, part of ISRO’s efforts to drive education in cutting-edge technologies, will run from August 19 to August 23, 2024.
This five-day program offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn about AI, ML, and Deep Learning (DL), along with their applications in geospatial technology. Designed to cater to a wide audience, the course includes study materials, practical applications, and a certificate of completion.
Eligibility for ISRO’s AI and ML Course
The course is tailored for professionals who wish to gain a foundational understanding of AI, ML, and DL, particularly those looking to apply these technologies to geospatial applications. It is also open to students, researchers, and enthusiasts from various fields, such as civil engineering, computer science, data analytics, geoinformatics, and geomatics. Importantly, there are no fees for the course, making it accessible to all. However, seats are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
ISRO AI, ML Course: Content and Study Material
The curriculum of this course provides an in-depth understanding of key concepts in AI, ML, and DL. Some of the core topics covered include:
- Introduction to AI/ML and DL: An overview of these technologies and their relevance in today’s world.
- Machine Learning Methods: Exploring supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques.
- Deep Learning Techniques: Detailed sessions on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and advanced methods like R-CNN, Faster RCNN, SSD, and YOLO.
- Applications Through Google Earth Engine: A hands-on approach to applying ML techniques using the Google Earth Engine.
- Python Programming for ML/DL Models: Practical coding sessions to develop machine and deep learning models using Python.
To aid learning, ISRO provides comprehensive study materials, including lecture slides, video recordings, and handouts. All materials will be accessible through ISRO’s eClass platform, ensuring that participants can review resources at their convenience.
Key Dates and Schedule
The course is structured over five days, with each session focusing on a specific area of AI, ML, or DL:
- August 19: Introduction to AI/ML and DL by Dr. Poonam Seth Tiwari
- August 20: Methods in Machine Learning (Supervised, Unsupervised, and Reinforcement) by Dr. Hina Pande
- August 21: Deep Learning Concepts (CNN, RNN, R-CNN, Faster RCNN, SSD, YOLO, etc.) by Dr. Poonam Seth Tiwari
- August 22: Machine Learning Through Google Earth Engine by Dr. Kamal Pandey
- August 23: Python for Machine/Deep Learning Models by Ravi Bhandari
Each session will be held from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
Certificate of Completion
Participants who maintain a minimum attendance of 70% will receive a Course Participation Certificate upon completion of the program. This certificate can be downloaded directly from ISRO’s Learning Management System (LMS).
How to Register for the ISRO AI, ML Course
Registration for this course is open online. Interested individuals can apply through ISRO’s provided link, and approval is automatic. Once registered, participants will receive login credentials to access the LMS and course materials.
A Part of ISRO’s Broader Educational Initiative
This course is part of the IIRS Outreach Programme, which began in 2007 with 12 participating universities and institutions. Since then, the programme has expanded to include over 3,500 network institutes across India, reaching a wide range of participants. This includes central and state universities, private institutions, government departments, forest resource professionals, research institutes, and even NGOs.
Through initiatives like this, ISRO is helping bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in AI and ML, empowering professionals and students alike to contribute to advancements in India’s space and geospatial sectors.
For those looking to enhance their expertise in AI and ML, this free ISRO course presents an invaluable opportunity to learn from leading experts, gain practical experience, and earn a certification from one of the world’s most respected space organizations.
