Apple’s iOS 18.2 introduces Genmoji, a feature that allows users to create personalized emojis using Apple Intelligence. By describing the desired emoji or basing it on photos of friends and family, users can enhance their messaging experience with unique, custom emojis.
Creating Genmoji on iPhone
To create a Genmoji on your iPhone:
- Access the Emoji Keyboard: Tap a text field, then tap the Emoji button or the Next Keyboard key to switch to the emoji keyboard.
- Open Genmoji: Tap the Genmoji button at the top right of the onscreen keyboard.
- Describe Your Genmoji: Enter a description in the “Describe a Genmoji” field, such as “Rainbow cactus.”
- Create and Add: Tap Done. To add the Genmoji to a message, swipe through to find the desired Genmoji, then tap Add.
For creating a Genmoji based on a photo, enter the name of a person identified in your photo library, add a description (e.g., “Danny celebrating his 35th birthday”), tap “Choose a Person,” select the individual, then choose a variation.
Refining Your Genmoji
You can refine your Genmoji by updating its description. For instance, changing “Giraffe riding a unicycle” to “Purple giraffe riding a unicycle across the ocean” will modify the Genmoji accordingly.
Deleting Genmoji
To delete a Genmoji:
- Access the Emoji Keyboard: Tap a text field, then tap the Emoji button or the Next Keyboard key.
- Navigate to Stickers: Swipe right or tap the Stickers button.
- Remove Genmoji: Tap the Stickers button, touch and hold the Genmoji, then tap Remove. Alternatively, in a Messages conversation, tap the Apps button, tap Stickers, touch and hold the Genmoji, then tap Remove.
Device Compatibility and Availability
Genmoji is available on iPhones running iOS 18.2 or later, specifically on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. For iPads, it’s available on models with M1 or later and iPad mini (A17 Pro) running iPadOS 18.2 or later. As of December 2024, Genmoji is available on iPhone and iPad, with availability on Mac expected in the coming months.
